NASDAQ100 Component Changes Applied to Indicant Select Stocks

Granbury, TX January 4 - Since the last presidential mid-term election year of 2002, thirty-nine of the NASDAQ100 stocks have been displaced with other stocks. Many of the former NASDAQ100 stocks have been bought-out, gone private, succumbed to reduced capitalization, or gone out of business. The new thirty-nine NASDAQ100 will be on this week’s Indicant Stock Market Report. It will be published this coming Sunday via email and on the Website.

The Indicant rarely changes stocks and funds on its tracking list. There are several reasons for this. The report card’s integrity is the primary reason for stabilizing underlying content. Frequently changing stocks and funds violates the very principle of a report card – that is reporting past and current performance based on actual tracking. Although the new additions to the NASDAQ100 have been processed through the Mid-term Indicant model, they were not being tracked during the time of the last signal. The Indicant must process the new stocks through the model to obtain the hold or avoid signals that apply as of the day of the updates.

Consequently, the Mid-term Indicant updates for the NASDAQ100 is theoretical for a period, while the Indicant Select Stocks performance levels are never theoretical. Performance for the NASDAQ100 before the changes this week were 76-stocks with hold signals. These stocks were up an average of 77.6% (annualized at 74.0%) since their respective buy signals an average of 54.6-weeks ago. After the inclusion of the new NASDAQ100 stocks, there are now 86-stocks with hold signals that are up 136.0% (annualized at 97.4%) since their respective buy signals an average of 72.5-weeks ago.

The old NASDAQ100 stocks are now in the Indicant Select Stocks category, effective today. Their inclusion results in 68-stocks with hold signals since their respective buy signals an average of 61.4-weeks ago. The stocks with hold signals are up 98.3% (annualized at 83.3%). Prior to this inclusion, there were 56-stocks with hold signals that were up 121.8% (annualized at 76.5%) since their respective buy signals an average of 82.9-weeks ago. None of these buy, sell, hold, or avoid signals are theoretical. All of them have been tracked and displayed on the Indicant since December 2001.

As you can see, the inclusion of the old NASDAQ100 stocks hurts the Indicant Select Stock performance measures while the inclusion of the new NASDAQ100 stocks elevates the performance of that index. This is because the new NASDAQ100 stocks have outperformed the old NASDAQ100 stocks. That is the primary reason for this displacement.

Another reason for not changing stocks and funds too often is to protect member’s links. Several members link directly to funds and stocks.

The last Indicant modification to stocks was in late 2001, just ahead of the last presidential mid-term election year. Former NASDAQ100 stocks that will remain on the Indicant tracking list are as follows, effective January 4, 2006.
